What Compress IMAGE does

Compress IMAGE reduces the file size of JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF images by re-encoding them at a lower quality and, where it helps, a smaller pixel size. It is the quick way to get a photo under an upload limit without opening an editor. If re-encoding would make a file larger, the original is returned instead.

Questions

Which formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF — whatever your browser can decode. TIFF and HEIC are not supported, and the tool says so instead of silently ignoring the file.

Will my PNG stay a PNG?

Yes, the output format follows the input unless you ask for JPG.

Why did one file come back the same size?

Re-encoding an already-optimised image often makes it bigger. When that happens the original is returned rather than a larger file.
